BlueWay Festival near Savannah Lakes Village this Saturday, August 28th

By Karen Greene

August 28th is kind of a big deal around here this year and a day that you do not want to miss. Thousands will gather at Baker Creek State Park, along the beautiful shoreline of Lake Thurmond, for the third annual Western SC BlueWay Festival. (Just around the corner from Savannah Lakes Village!)

This festival celebrates our region as a premier destination for outdoor, healthy living and playing, and--if we can toot our own horn here--is our brainchild! Born from a night around a bonfire with close friends followed by many conversations on back porches, the BlueWay Festival provides outdoor experiences for all abilities and ages. Some are happy to watch the amazing performances by our professional experts; others jump right in and try something new for the first time! Either way, you will have a fun-filled day at the BlueWay!

Our team of volunteers works tirelessly to grow and improve our festival experience each year. We strive to bring you and our region an unforgettable day. And did I mention that it is FREE!?!

This year's performers include The Freestyle Connection Pro BMX Bike Stunt show along with their airbag ramp to cushion those extra high jumps. Straight from the Hollywood studio of "America's Got Talent" come the Canine Stars! This group of Rescue Dogs and their owners will wow you with their talent and strong bonds. They will perform stunts of all types from agility, fastball, high jumps, disc catching, and dock jumping, and more.

Pro Wake Boarder Joel Shradder will be returning to catch some jaw-dropping air and share his skills out in the water. Augusta Tomahawks will be on-site showing how to stick a hawk accurately in a target. And yes, you get to try it too!

We will have several friendly competitions, demonstrations of many outdoor skills, and engaging activities for all. For the kids, the epic water slide is back by popular demand! Along with a lengthy slip-and-slide!

Always wanted to try to kayak? Paddleboard? Play some disc golf? Do some trail running/walking? Try out an electric-assist bicycle? Learn how to train your dog? These are just a few of the many activities available throughout the day.

The South is known for great music, and our region is exceptional. We are excited to showcase three new bands to the Blueway Stage this year. The lineup kicks off with Surrender Cobra from Greenwood, SC, followed by She-N-She from the Augusta area. Our headliner has been making waves in the Upstate/Greenville area: the magnificent trio Crawford, Colt, and Waite.

Delicious food from a variety of vendors and icy cold craft beer will be available throughout the day. Rumor has it that Good Times Brewing (Greenwood, SC) and Back Paddle Brewing (Lincolnton, GA) are teaming up to create a special brew in honor of the BlueWay festival!

The festival takes place, August 28th, 2021, 10:00 am - 8:00 pm at Baker Creek State Park just across the Little River from Savannah Lakes Village. Come by boat or car, and be sure to register for your wristband so that you can participate throughout the day. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Western SC BlueWay Festival and check out our website www.bluewayfestival.com for up-to-date information, including our schedule of activities.

Come and enjoy outdoor recreation your way at the BlueWay!
