When Russ Verrell first heard of Savannah Lakes Village fifteen years ago while attending a golf show, he couldn’t imagine ever moving here. Living in a South Carolina national forest on a vast freshwater lake with two world-class championship golf courses, no snow, and four distinct seasons sounded unbelievable: “Like a nice dream,” he smiles, “but not something I’d ever really do.”
However, after learning about Savannah Lakes Village, Russ’s curiosity piqued enough to forgo his annual golf outing to Hilton Head, SC. Instead, he and his golf buddies planned a trip to Savannah Lakes. They stayed for a week, played both Tara and Monticello golf courses, rented a boat, and explored the lake. Although they had a fantastic and memorable vacation, Russ still was not ready to leave his family and friends behind and move south. As time passed and the cold snowy winters continued, he “could not shake the gentle climate, peace, quiet and beauty of Lake Thurmond and Savannah Lakes Village.”
When Russ and his wife Cara did decide to move South, they explored the Florida and the SC coasts to be sure, but Savannah Lakes Village remained at the top of the list. They both loved the community, freshwater lake, and forest. The smell of the loblolly pines was so reminiscent of Michigan, they both felt at home.
For Russ, as a golfer, a major lure of Savannah Lakes Village was the golf community; friendly yet competitive with both men and women’s golf associations (MGA and WGA). There are two championship golf courses, Tara and Monticello, both with flexible tee times and six sets of tees that accommodate all levels of golfers. Carts are allowed within 30 yards of the center of the greens; therefore, golf continues to be accessible as we age. With a pro on staff, lessons are available year-round for both beginners and seasoned players. The courses are a member-owned amenity and membership is included with homeownership
Monticello golf course is considered to be one of the most beautiful courses in the Southeast. It has hosted PGA tours for both men and women.
Come and see for yourself. The Leisurely Living Stay and Play package at Savannah Lakes Village is exclusive to our clients. With advance notice, guests are welcome to play with either the MGA or WGA. Rental clubs are available at the pro shop. But be careful! You might fall in love and change the course of your life as Russ and Cara did!
