A few years ago, our friend Shannon came to visit her mom who lived in Savannah Lakes Village for close to ten years. On that day in 2016, she flew from the West Coast and drove from Atlanta to McCormick, SC. It was the evening before Memorial Day and jet lag from the time change and flight pushed her towards relaxing and getting a good night's sleep. The next morning her mom woke her with coffee, a red, white, and blue t-shirt to wear, and a reminder that it was Memorial Day. The last thing she expected to do was attend a big event first thing the next morning.
Coupled with the patriotism of that Memorial Day was an excitement for a summer vacation she hadn’t experienced since childhood. While there she said she soon realized that she was not the only out-of-town family member who had just arrived. The feeling Shannon had sharing this time with the local residents was an experience she will never forget. She recommends that you join the many travelers who make their way to the freshwater coast for the summer and start your own unforgettable memories.
Life here in the summertime is immersed in the forests and the lake. Just breathing the fresh air and being in the sunlight makes people happier and at ease. In fact, there is scientific proof that being in nature creates wellbeing and happiness! A recent study found that forests are the best natural remedy for chronic stress and other urban-related ailments.
And so family, tourists, and part-timers are drawn here for vacations and Memorial Day denotes a palpable shift. It's always fun to see new faces in the local grocery store with their shopping carts full of picnic supplies for the coming week or to bump into an old friend we haven't seen since October! We may have to wait a few minutes longer at our two traffic lights in summer, but no one seems to mind. Summer is pure magic and McCormick's "Natural Pace of Life" (our county's motto) goes on undisturbed.
Everything we can do outside, near or on the lake adds incredible peacefulness to our lives! Boating to church is an option all summer with The Lutheran Church by the Lake outdoor services at Elijah Clark State Park. Boating to lunch or dinner is also a favorite with two marinas nearby offering delicious food and live music.
Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, boating, jet skiing, floating, swimming, and the impromptu water exercise off a friend's dock are just part of the lifestyle. That’s why Shannon decided to make Savannah Lakes Village her permanent home. She met the love her life here, She works from home with flexible hours. She enjoys walking or riding the golf cart to her mom’s house for coffee and a swim off the dock where she is often greeted by the Great Blue Heron that lives there.
